“Keep the Faith”
Start With Prayer:
Dear God, please help me to hear you, and understand your message for me.
During His ministry on earth, Jesus continues to mentor His disciples, helping them to grow in their understanding of God, and the work that they were called to do. He sends them out to preach and to heal as many people as they can. During one particular story, Jesus walks down a mountain and is confronted by a father. The man begs Jesus to come and heal his son. He tells Jesus, “your disciples tried, but failed. Could you please come and save my son?!”
Once they were back together, alone, Jesus’ disciples ask Him why it was that they couldn’t save this boy. Today’s verse is Jesus’ answer to them.
20 “Because you’re not yet taking God seriously,” said Jesus. “The simple truth is that if you had a mere kernel of faith, a poppy seed, say, you would tell this mountain, ‘Move!’ and it would move. There is nothing you wouldn’t be able to tackle.”
The Message Version
What’s the point?:
I love that there are different translations of the Bible. Sometimes we need to hear the same message in multiple ways for it to really hit home.
The version of today’s verse, that we looked at a moment ago, is The Message Version.
I typically read the New International Version of the Bible, and this verse, in the NIV says, “He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Always having read that version of this verse, I always found myself asking, “But what exactly is holding me back from having faith the size of a mustard seed? What does that mean exactly? I mean, I believe in God, with doubts sprinkled in from time to time, which TO ME, is ‘having faith the size of at least a mustard seed.’ Right?!”
After reading The Message Version, as I’m sitting here, writing this post, God opened my eyes to a new idea.
“Because you are not taking God seriously“
I struggle with faith, because I don’t always take God seriously.
I pray about things, but then take back the control of said situations, into my own hands. I do this, because deep down, I honestly am not fully sure I believe that God was serious when He said He’d answer.
Like many of you, other prayers in my life have gone “unanswered,” or weren’t answered in the way in which I thought they should be .. and so, I stopped taking Him seriously.
Real faith, can indeed be sprinkled with doubt or hurt or anger at God from time to time …
BUT … Real “Mustard Seed Faith,” completely trusts in God. It takes Him at His word and believes in your heart of hearts that you don’t need to take back the control of whatever you’ve prayed for, because He has it.
It means that we take Him seriously enough to trust, and that trust is what allows us to live in peace … even when things aren’t YET settled.
What does all of this mean to me/how can I apply that to my life today?
We have been through an amazing journey together these past three weeks. And while I pray that your faith has grown by leaps and bounds … And I pray that you have begun to create habits of spending time with God … y’all, it’s only been three weeks.
This journey of faith that we’re on, was designed to last a lifetime. Which means, we’re only at the beginning.
We will still doubt, we will continue to fall short, and we will undoubtedly fall away from time to time.
BUT, my hope and prayer for you, is that while you still don’t have all your questions answered, that you have discovered a new way of doing life with God, that compels you to keep going.
My desire and dream for you is that you keep showing up, that you continue to commit to spending time with Him each day … so that you CAN discover those answers you’re longing for.
Faith the size of a mustard seed, is all it takes for God to work in your heart and life in powerful ways.
Faith the size of a mustard seed, is all it takes for you to start placing trust in the God who created you and knows you better than you know yourself.
Faith the size of a mustard seed, is what will take you from trying to merely survive your days, to THRIVING each and every day.
I am so incredibly proud of you friend, and so stinkin’ excited to continue on this journey of faith with you. Man, our God is oh, so good!
